Moorpark Man Charged in Death of Paul Kessler
Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today, November 16, 2023, that two felony charges will be filed against Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji (DOB 05/06/73), of Moorpark, in connection with the death of Paul Kessler. Alnaji has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and battery causing serious bodily injury. Both charges have special allegations that Alnaji personally inflicted great bodily injury.
District Attorney Reviewing Case Involving Death of Paul Kessler
Today, November 16, 2023, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office officially submitted their investigation into the death of Paul Kessler to the District Attorney’s Office. Sheriff’s investigators arrested Loay Alnaji (DOB 05/06/73), at his home in Moorpark this morning.
Throughout their investigation, prosecutors have been in daily consultation with the Sheriff’s Office and are finalizing review of the evidence. A charging decision is expected by later today and a status update will be issued at that time.
Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Awarded Grant from Office of Traffic Safety for Specialized DUI Prosecution Team
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office will have a specialized prosecution team to handle alcohol and drug-impaired driving cases through a $523,621 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS.)
This is the twelfth consecutive year the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has received the funding for a specialized DUI prosecution program. Last year, the prosecution team filed 1,156 DUI cases, including 105 DUI drug cases and 12 DUI combined alcohol and drug cases.Final Defendant Sentenced for Deadly 2016 Ventura Gang Shooting
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that Alexis Ivan Ramirez (DOB 08/30/95), of Ventura, was sentenced to 25 years prison for his actions in a deadly 2016 gang shooting. Ramirez pled guilty on May 1, 2023, to voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder, both felonies. He also admitted to special allegations including gang enhancements.
Five-Year Remembrance of Borderline Bar & Grill Shooting
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office will mark the five-year anniversary of the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting with a memorial remembrance on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. That night five years ago, 12 lives were taken including on-duty Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Ron Helus.
Ventura County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative Receives Second Grant
Sheriff James Fryhoff and District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today the award of a second $2.5 million grant from the United States Department of Justice in support of the Ventura County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. The Sheriff’s Forensic Services Bureau, with assistance from the District Attorney’s Office, applied for this supplemental grant to further efforts that began following receipt of a prior award of $2.5 million in late 2021.
Auto Insurance Company Settles Consumer Protection Lawsuit for $1.1 Million
VENTURA, Calif. – District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that Alliance United Insurance Company, which provides auto and casualty insurance services to consumers throughout California, settled a multi-jurisdictional civil lawsuit alleging that the company engaged in unfair business practices in violation of Business and Professions Code 17200. Alliance United specializes in offering non-standard, high-risk auto policies. Many of its clients are from lower income and/or under-represented communities.
Ventura Man Charged with Human Trafficking of a Minor
VENTURA, Calif. – District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that on October 23, 2023, Kai Sommers (DOB 12/26/87), of Ventura, was charged with four felony counts of child sex crimes. The allegations include two counts of human trafficking of a minor, distribution of child sexual assault material and possession of child sexual assault material by someone with a prior conviction. Aggravating circumstances that Sommers served a prior prison sentence were also alleged for all four counts. Sommers pled not guilty to all counts at arraignment.
High School Coach Pleads Guilty to Sex Crimes with Student
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that on October 17, 2023, Aaron James Mora (DOB 04/14/98), of Oxnard, pled guilty to one felony count of sending harmful matter to a child. He also admitted to the special allegations that the victim was vulnerable and that he took advantage of a position of trust or confidence to commit the offense.
